I was so excited to attend the Food Shed Co-op (FSC) Groundbreaking ceremony on July 18. It was a gorgeous day a well orchestrated event. I’ve been honored to be a part of the FSC fundraising team over the years. In 2021 I assisted the co-op with capital campaign planning that resulted in record breaking success, raising $1.7 M in 12 short weeks. I’m again honored to be part of the team as we develop a plan to raise an additional $485,000 that is needed as a result of rising interest rates and inflation.
The FSC groundbreaking event was a huge success. When planning a groundbreaking event here are some tips to make your event as successful as the FSC event:
- Invite EVERYONE and publicize widely. Food Shed co-op did a great job of including owners, those not yet owners, city partners including the Mayor, and the co-ops new neighbors as well as their construction team. They communicated about the event on social media, in newsletters, and at events. In true P6 fashion other co-ops were also invited and attended the FSC event.
- Use clearly defined signage. When folks get to the event signage should tell them exactly where to go and what to do. There was great signage everything from parking to investing.
- Sell some swag. Create a limited edition t-shirt, bag, hat or sticker and make them available at the event. When a limited supply exists, demand automatically increases. I bought myself a FSC Groundbreaking shirt and picked up a free groundbreaking sticker.
- Keep refreshments simple. You don’t need to go all out for refreshments for a groundbreaking. Having handheld foods ensures you don’t need to mess with tableware and creates a festive environment.
